Back to Main Page:

Installed the sights.

I took a low rear sight and then filed the back-half down to a taper like the original.  I cut two lines inside the front and rear bevels. 2009-04-10 004.JPG (240983 bytes) This is cut down only 1/32". A cut at this depth is make at either end. Then I draw a line between the lowest point of the two cuts. I do the same for the other side. Now I cut2009-04-10 007.JPG (253178 bytes) a series of cuts across the barrel between the lines that are spaced about 1/16" apart. Now I can either chisel the material out of the center or take the hacksaw at a horizontal plane and cut the material out. I finish using a file to remove material down to the bottom of the cuts and flatten this area the best I can.  Then using a safe triangular file, I lay the safe side down and then cut into the two ends. This starts my dovetails. Then I try fit the sight into the slot. When I get close, I pull out my special chisel. This is a 1/2" wide cold chisel that I tapered on one side. this allows the chisel to slide under the metal I filed out and when I hammer the chisel, it cuts and lifts the metal to widen the dovetailed slot.

2009-04-10 011.JPG (193366 bytes)Now the rear sight is positioned into the center of the barrel flat. I use a screw file to deepen the slot cast in the sight.

Now I'm ready for the front sight.  Here is photo of the original and a tracing of the original. The origial was a brass sight. I measured 3/16" high.2009-04-10 014.JPG (211134 bytes) 2009-04-10 015.JPG (178509 bytes)

I filed the dovetail for this similar to the rear sight, except I did not use the special chisel. I do this so the sight can be moved later if necessary. Although the sight on the original was filed flush with the barrel flats, I purposely left extra material so if the sight is moved, the dovetailed area is not exposed. 2009-04-10 016.JPG (184640 bytes) 2009-04-10 020.JPG (136858 bytes)

After the sights were installed, I worked on the buttplate an filed the lower buttplate screw flush and then smoothed up the butt area around the bottom and the end of the patchbox. This will keep any clothing from snagging in this area. 2009-04-10 017.JPG (156955 bytes) Now this area is very smooth and snag proofed.
