Installing The Barrel & Tenon:

I set the breechplug on top of the wood to mark it's location. Then I removed the wood. This involved using a knife to cut along the inside of the lines. Then V cut along the lines and used my 1/4" chisel to cut along the three sides. The chisel was then lowered into a horizontal plane and was driven into the wood to remove sections of wood to the depth of the vertical chisel cuts.

Once the channel was cut, then the barrel breechplug was blackened and carefully lowered into the cut out area slowly. It was removed frequently and a knife chisel was used to remove the blackened wood. This took awhile, but the finish was worth it.

With the barrel now inletted, I made a brass tenon to replace the original steel tenon with a hole in it. Plus, I had to make a dovetailed piece of brass to fill the slot where the other tenon was located. The height of the tenon was made a 1/16" shorter than the web thickness between the bottom of the barrel channel in the stock and the top of the ram rod channel. The tenon was blackened and a slot was made in the bottom flat of the barrel channel to accommodate the tenon on the barrel. Next using a depth gauge from the top of the barrel, I marked the outside of the stock to indicate where to drill for the the pin to pass thru. I used a 3/32" pin.
