Tapered Ramrod:

The ramrod is tapered from a heavy 3/8" down to a 5/16" rod tip on the end. The small end will be inserted into the stock thru the thimbles. The large end will be projected from the end of the stock.

To taper the ramrod, I used a hand rasp and a small plane. Here the tools and the ramrod are displayed after taking down the ramrod. 2010-06-28 009.JPG (177162 bytes)

I installed the ramrod tip and will pin it to the ramrod using a piece of 3/32" pin stock.

Then I sandpapered the full length of the ramrod. A piece of sandpaper is wrapped around the rod and the rod is pushed and pulled thru the sandpaper till the rod is smoothed and rounded.

The ramrod tip was browned and the wooden ramrod was then stained.
