Welcome to "Hoot AL's" Rifle Shop!!

Greetings from the farm fields of the Great Plains, otherwise known locally as Newton, IA or "East Of Cornpatch, IA" on other sites. Alan Neubauer is the name, and I'm a Journeyman Gunbuilder who builds antique blackpowder rifles and pistols in an effort to keep the Spirit of the Traditionalist Gunmaker alive.  The vintage of the guns are from 1730 to 1830, and are representative of several different schools of gunsmith. My favorite rifles to make are the Lancaster Pennsylvania schooled and "Hogs" Southern Mountain rifles. From time to time I like to take on a challenge of something different in an effort to better understand other rifles. One example of this is the Edward Marshall rifle I'm building now. You'll find information of this gun in the Current Projects section.

Take a look around the shop at some of the guns.  All guns crafted in the shop are in a traditionalist vein. You'll see a variety of guns including a Southern Tennessee rifle and a free-styled target pistol I designed. To spice it up, I'm including several of the photo albums of rifles as they  transitioned from a block of wood to the finished state. One of the albums has a couple of movies.  Was graced with the opportunity to visit Weston, MO and attend the Bevel Brothers' "Over The Log Shoot" this year. I dedicated a page of photos on that unique shoot.

My mentor & Master Gunsmith is Steve "Bookie" Bookout.  We've been friends since 1978, and he's responsible for getting me into this craft.  Recently we wrote a book together on how to build "A Wooden Iowa Rifler" similar to those built over a hundred years ago.  The purpose of the bench is for putting rifle grooves into gun barrels. See the  Rifling Book link for more information.

Favorite Things To Do: Shooting black powder rifles & pistols, fishing, panning for gold and playing with my grandchildren, but not necessarily in that order.
