Lock & Side Plate Areas Shaped:

After reviewing several examples of Southern Mountain rifles with this type of Mountain lock, I drew the panel area around the lock plate. Then using a caving gouge I removed wood from my line away from the lock panel. This was done gradually, because I wanted the panel to appear to rise up out of the stock and not look like it was cut and pasted onto the stock.  With the panel raised, I used a piece of white paper and a soft leaded pencil to shade around the panel area.

This gave me a pattern to cut out to duplicate this panel on the other side of the stock on the side panel side.

I used the gouge again to relief the area and raise the side panel from the stock.
