Nose Cap Installation

Place the nose cap about an 1/8" back from the muzzle of the barrel. Cut off the excess wood. Then place the cap against the stock and draw a line around the face of the cap.

Once this is done, I measure the deepest depth I need to cut. Then I transfer this measurement to my saw. This will be the across the ramrod channel on the stock. Then I measure the shallowest cuts along the sides, then transfer this measurement to my saw.  I then cut down to the narrowest of the cuts along each side. Then cut across the ramrod channel in the stock down to the deeper cut mark.

Once this is done, I use my chisel to back cut along the inside of this cut around the stock. Using my 4 In hand file, I file down the nose of the stock down to the line on the face of the stock. Now I remove the wood between the two ends till it is level. Using candle soot on the inside of the cap, I work the cap onto the stock. Making sure to squeeze the ends of the cap so it grips the barrel. With the cap in place, blacken the open end of the cap and slide it onto the stock. You should see an even black mark on the stock where the cap meets the stock. Now you have a tight fit.

With the cap now snug and tight to the barrel, I grab a copper rivet. Meaure the diameter of the rivet and select a matching drill bit. With the barrel still in the stock, drill thru the cap into the stock and stop when you hit the barrel. Remove the barrel and finish drilling the hole thru the stock.

To insert the rivet, you need to flatten two sides of the rivet so it can fit into the lower flat of the barrel channel. Then inlet the rivet into the stock. When the rivet is now flush with the bottom flat of the barrel channel, insert the rivet thru the cap. Reinstall the barrel. Pin the barrel into the stock. I make a mark on the side of the rivet about 1/8" up from the cap. Remove the barrel and the rivet. Cut the rivet to length.

Counter sink the outside of the hole drilled into the cap. Reinstall the rivet into the stock along with the barrel. Place the barrel on something solid, because you need to peen the rivet to fill the countersink hole on the cap.

Once this has been done successfully, file away the excess material and the rivet will blend into the brass. The job is done!
