Install The Flash Liner:

To locate the flash liner correctly with the lock, I drew a line across the top flats of the flash pan. Then I drew a line vertically on the barrel in the center of the pan. I also dropped the ramrod down the barrel and marked the end of the ramrod where it met the end of the barrel. Laying the ramrod outside of the barrel aligning the mark with the end of the barrel I found the flash liner will intersect the face of the breech plug. This is good. I will cone the face of the breech plug so when it is loaded, the powder will drop into the flash liner for better ignition.

Since this is a 1/4" X 28 treaded liner, I

With the plug removed, use a round file and cone the marked area toward the center of the breech plug face. Reinsert the plug several times to insure the coned area is large enough to not block the flash liner opening in the barrel.  The photo on the right below, I shined a flash light down the barrel to show how much opening you should have exposed.

At this point, I used a countersink to remove a small amount of metal surrounding the opening for the flash liner. I then screwed the liner down into the barrel tightly. Then I used a file to level the liner with the side of the barrel.  In the photo to the right, you can see the hole is centered and slightly above the pan. (NOTE: When the pan flashes, it will cast off sparks from the top of the powder and it is these sparks which will pass thru the flash liner into your powder charge.)
